Socks
Although Pilates is typically done while barefoot, in order to freely articulate the toes, and for the purpose of stability I highly recommend wearing non-slip, stability socks during your exercise.
Living and working in a country that enjoys the four seasons - Spring, Summer, Winter and Fall - I know, all too well, how cold our feet can get when doing exercises on studio floors.
As I work with clients all day, I notice how many people like to keep their socks on, regardless of whether they’re in group mat classes, or in private settings on apparatus. But, there’s one small problem with wearing your favourite pair of socks. Regular socks can be slippery, especially when it comes to wearing them during Pilates classes. The last thing we need is for our feet to give out under us while we are doing exercises that require a great deal of balance and stability.
I set out to find the perfect sock to wear while doing Pilates, during my search I left no stone unturned. So far, my favourite is the eco-friendly, 100% organic cotton ToeSox. Like gloves on your hands ToeSox are designed to fit your individual toes, allowing plenty of articulation and providing a non-slip surface for the sole. ToeSox comes in a wide array of colours and patterns, and there’s even toe-less versions for the summer, or for when we’d like to show off a pedicure!
ToeSox are so great, they were chosen by So You Think You Can Dance choreographer Mia Michaels for her dancers in the July 23rd Opening Number and again for the Season Finale on August 6th!
Since ToeSox are not readily available in stores, you can purchase them here. If you live in the Greater Toronto Area, and are interested in getting a pair for yourself, without having to wait for it to be shipped to you, or if you’d like to purchase them wholesale to make them available at your studio or pro-shop, contact me at 647-302-9221 or by email at lili@formandfunctionpilates.com.
